Bangalore, also known as Bengaluru, is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Bangalore is also called the Garden City due to the numerous gardens and the extensive green cover. Located at an altitude of 1000 metres above sea level, Bangalore is India\'s third most populous city. Of late, Bangalore is also called the hub for India\'s information technology sector and the land of software engineers!
Bangalore got its name from the word “Bendha Kaalu” (which means boiled beans in Kannada). King Veera Ballala of the Vijayanagara kingdom was once lost in a forest. After wandering the forest alone and hungry he and happened to stumble upon a lonely cottage where only old woman lived. The lady seeing the King’s plight offered him the only leftovers she had, boiled beans, and thus the place came to be known as “Bendha kaalu ooru” (the land of boiled beans). Bendha kaalu ooru later came to be known as Bengaluru.
Bangalore was found by Kempe Gowda. Bangalore was also ruled by a number of rulers and dynasties, including the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire and Tipu Sultan.
Due to its high elevation, Bangalore enjoys a more moderate climate throughout the year, making the place a ‘pensioner\'s paradise’.
There are a lot of lakes in and around Bangalore that add to the beauty of the city. The main lakes in Bangalore are Hebbal lake, Ulsoor lake, Madiwala lake, Agara lake and Bellandur lake. But some of the lakes are under threat due to drying up, pollution and illegal land filling.
The main gardens in Bangalore are Cubbon Park and Lal Bagh Gardens.

Bangalore City Railway station and Yesvantpur Junction are the main railway stations. Following the footsteps of Delhi Metro, a rapid transit system called the Namma Metro is being built in Bangalore. A 7 km stretch from Byappanahalli to MG Road was opened to public in October 2011.Bangalore is a cosmopolitan city, having people from all over India staying here for work or for a better living. Bangalore has also a large expatriate population.
