The scenic hill station of Ooty situated in the mountain ranges of Nilgiri, in the state of Tamil Nadu is known as the \'Queen of Hill Stations\' and rightfully so. It sees a swarm of tourists all throughout the year owing to its pleasant weather throughout.
Established by the British in the early 19th century as the then Madras government\'s summer headquarters, Ooty known colloquially as Udhagamandalam was originally a tribal land occupied by the Todas and few other tribes. Under the British rule, its name changed from Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and now it is popularly known by its short name Ooty.
Ooty has a plethora of interesting places to visit, and many interesting activities to indulge in. Of the many tourist places, the Government Rose Garden is a very popular one. Situated on the slopes of the Elk Hill in Ooty at an altitude of 2200 m, it has over 20,000 varieties of roses, which is the largest collection of roses in the country.
Another must-visit spot is the 22 acre Ooty Botanical Gardens which is very famous for its collection of exotic and indigenous plants, shrubs, medicinal plants, bonsais and many more. The Garden is also famous for its flower shows and exhibitions of rare plant species held annually.
Ooty Lake constructed in 1824 by its then collector John Sullivan is another attraction in Ooty. John Sullivan\'s bungalow, the \'Stone Bungalow\' which was the first bungalow in Ooty is now the residence of the principal of Government Arts College in Ooty.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway built by the British in1908 is still functional. Although a diesel locomotive has taken over the steam locomotive between Coonoor and Udagamandalam, the Nilgiri Toy Train ride is still one of the major attractions in Ooty. Other important tourist spots nearby to Ooty are the Madumalai National Park and the Doddabetta Peak, which is the highest peak in the Nilgiris.
Ooty is around 537 km from Chennai by road. The best way to reach Ooty from Chennai would be to either take a direct bus or drive/hire a car. Since Ooty doesn\'t have either a railway station or an airport, flying to Ooty from Chennai or travelling by train are not very economical options both in terms of time and currency. A direct bus to Ooty takes around 10 hours and is a good option since Ooty bus stand is also right in the heart of the city. If you are driving a car then it takes about 9 hours. With several food joints on the way and a picturesque route all throughout, the drive is sure to be a pleasurable one.
