For some, truck driving is just a means of earning money, for some, it is an adventure sport. Whatever it is, a CDL (California Driving license) is required to drive a truck. Acquiring a CDL ain’t an easy task. One has to have 44 hours plus of actual driving time, not including observation time. For which one must enroll in a proper CDL school and receive California CDL training.
One must take the following things into consideration while choosing a trucking school CA out of the many California truck driving schools:
• Whether the CDL school is accredited by an agency affiliated to U.S department of education.
• Drive times, equipment, facilities, instructors, placement assistance, program length and student to truck ratio.
After the training is completed, one has to undergo the procedure of applying for a CDL. However, A CDL is not needed for all kinds of vehicles, it is only required if the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is more than 26000 lbs or if the towing units are more than 10,000 lbs or if the vehicle has more than 15 passengers. A CDL is also necessary for school buses carrying more than 15 bus passengers.
To apply for a CDL, one must be over 18 years of age. One must apply to the DMV along with a Medicare card which proves that you are a resident of California. You shall also have to fill in a medical form which declares you to be physically fit to work. Finally, you shall have to pass a vision and drugs test. CDL is classified into class A, class B and class C. Class A is for vehicles which are 26000 lbs and carry 10,000 lbs or more, class B is also for vehicles which are 26000 lbs but carry 10,000 lbs or less. Class C is for vehicles which weigh 26000 lbs or less and carry 15 passengers.
Acquiring a CDL is not really a hassle free process and hence it is best to leave it to a CDL school. There are 3 types of CDL schools viz. public, private and company sponsored. Public and private schools offer training to truck drivers at a specific fee which may or may not cover financial aid whereas a company sponsored CDL schools will provide training and placement both to their truck drivers.
Whatever CDL school you go to, driving a truck requires immense physical strength. A person has to be mentally prepared for such an uphill task. The guidelines for acquiring a CDL are different for international residents, new CA residents and for people who are under the age of 18 and still want a CDL. For driving outside California, you need to be 21 years and over.
After acquiring the license, you need to remember safe operation of a vehicle requires practiced skill, knowledge, and a respectful understanding of the limitations imposed in the benefit of environment and fellow drivers. Also, one must follow all the road safety measures set by the Californian authorities and must completely avoid Driving Under Influence (DUI).
