Weather or sounding balloons are special high altitude high balloons that are used to carry meteorological instruments aloft. These balloons are launched differently from other types of balloons. Before one launch one, there are some important factors that you should keep in mind. Firstly, the balloon should be of the right size that can accommodate expansion and the weight to be lifted.
Weather balloons can reach an altitude of 90, 000 feet or more. At such a high altitude, the balloon will expand outwards as a result of the low atmospheric pressure. A 5ft balloon can expand up to 20ft at such a height. You need extra space to accommodate this expansion. Consequently, you should not over fill the balloon. The type of batteries that you are going to use for your equipments is very important. It can be very frustrating to lose your payload. If you are using GPS tracking for data recovery, you should consider how the equipments are going to work in the freezing temperatures that characterize high altitudes. Ordinary battery cannot function at temperatures of about -50 degree Celsius that are found at 90,000ft. You should use lithium batteries if you want to have any chance of keeping in touch with the weather balloon kits. Energizer lithium batteries are a perfect option since they can run at longer periods compared to standard ones. They can also withstand extremely low temperatures.
It is also good to consider how you are going to transport the weather balloon. You will require a good car or a jeep to carry the helium canister. A large steel helium canister weighs around 100 pounds and it can stand as much as 6ft tall.
While launching the weather balloon, you should evaluate the nature of the launch area. You cannot launch a weather balloon in an area that borders a military base. It might be mistaken as an enemy attack, and it will be shot down.
