Siliguri is the second largest city in West Bengal. Siliguri lies in a narrow strip of land, formerly called the Siliguri corridor, sometimes referred to as chicken’s neck which is 40 km wide at its broadest part and 21 km wide at its narrowest part. Being located at the foot hills of the Himalayas, Siliguri is a beautiful town with lush green valleys, interspersed with tea and timber plantations, undulating hills and pristine rivers, Mahananda being the major one.
Siliguri is called the gateway to the north east India due to its strategic location making it the main entrance to all the eight north eastern states and even the neighbouring countries, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet and Bangladesh. One has to pass through Siliguri to reach most of the hill stations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Rangpo and Kurseong.
